Suburb profile

Port Augusta is a regional mid-sized suburb in Port Augusta Council, oriented around local life rather than the metro orbit of Adelaide. Residents are mostly families and working professionals, with family life visible on every street. School and preschool provision is plentiful within the local area.

Weekends tend to revolve around local favourites: a café, a market run, a walk through town. Parks and open space are a real strength relative to many regional towns, easy for walks, sport and weekend downtime. Buses are a genuine asset, linking residents to work, study and nearby neighbourhoods.

Purchase and rent costs sit on the more affordable side of the local range. Historic fabric and newer builds sit side by side as the area renews without erasing its past.

Versus similar regional towns, the suburb reads around average on desirability, chiefly because safety trail behind. Limited access to some essential local services also trimmed the result.

ABS Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA), 2021 release — the latest available, derived from the 2021 Census. Deciles rank suburbs nationally from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

What do IRSAD and IRSD measure?

IRSAD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage. Combines indicators of advantage (e.g. high income, skilled occupations) and disadvantage. Higher decile = more advantaged relative to other Australian areas.

IRSD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage. Focuses on disadvantage only (e.g. low income, unemployment, limited education). Higher decile = less disadvantage nationally.

A new SEIFA edition typically follows each census; the ABS has not announced a release date beyond 2021.
