Suburb profile

Nowra is a regional established suburb in Shoalhaven Council, oriented around local life rather than the metro orbit of Sydney. Regional towns and local services do more of the everyday heavy lifting than the city. Residents are mostly families and working professionals, with plenty of young families in the mix.

Everyday shopping is a local strength, with enough shops and services to cover most weekly needs close to home. Parks and open space are a real strength relative to many regional towns, easy for walks, sport and weekend downtime. Daily life works well on foot, with buses also serving the suburb.

Purchase and rent costs sit on the more affordable side of the local range. Steady development is bringing new homes and gradual renewal to parts of the suburb.

Against similar regional towns, growth momentum stand out and the overall desirability rating is good, with community and employment, plus safety less decisive.

ABS Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA), 2021 release — the latest available, derived from the 2021 Census. Deciles rank suburbs nationally from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

What do IRSAD and IRSD measure?

IRSAD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage. Combines indicators of advantage (e.g. high income, skilled occupations) and disadvantage. Higher decile = more advantaged relative to other Australian areas.

IRSD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage. Focuses on disadvantage only (e.g. low income, unemployment, limited education). Higher decile = less disadvantage nationally.

A new SEIFA edition typically follows each census; the ABS has not announced a release date beyond 2021.
