Suburb profile

Newborough is a regional mid-sized suburb in Latrobe Council, oriented around local life rather than the metro orbit of Melbourne. Established families and long-term residents give the suburb a settled feel, with plenty of young families in the mix. Weekends tend to revolve around local favourites: a café, a market run, a walk through town.

Parks and open space are a real strength relative to many regional towns, easy for walks, sport and weekend downtime. Most routine trips are on foot, while buses cover longer journeys across the metro area. Housing is more affordable than in many parts of the state.

Reported crime has been rising recently. A trickle of new development is refreshing selected pockets without changing the overall feel.

Schools and education push the suburb to a good desirability read, even as community and employment look more ordinary among similar regional towns.

ABS Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA), 2021 release — the latest available, derived from the 2021 Census. Deciles rank suburbs nationally from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

What do IRSAD and IRSD measure?

IRSAD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage. Combines indicators of advantage (e.g. high income, skilled occupations) and disadvantage. Higher decile = more advantaged relative to other Australian areas.

IRSD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage. Focuses on disadvantage only (e.g. low income, unemployment, limited education). Higher decile = less disadvantage nationally.

A new SEIFA edition typically follows each census; the ABS has not announced a release date beyond 2021.
