Suburb profile

Away from the major hubs, Cooma is a mid-sized suburb in Snowy Monaro Regional Council with its own quieter rhythm. Long-term locals and family households define much of the community, with plenty of young families in the mix. Weekends tend to revolve around local favourites: a café, a market run, a walk through town.

Green space punches above what many regional towns offer, with parks and playgrounds woven through the suburb. Buses are a genuine asset, linking residents to work, study and nearby neighbourhoods. The local market is more attainable than many surrounding suburbs.

Reported crime has been falling recently. Infill and new builds are slowly updating the area without overwhelming its existing character.

Against similar regional towns, schools and education, plus housing affordability stand out and the overall desirability rating is good, with community and employment, plus growth momentum less decisive. Limited access to some essential local services also trimmed the result.

IRSD decile (2021)
4/10

ABS Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA), 2021 release — the latest available, derived from the 2021 Census. Deciles rank suburbs nationally from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

What do IRSAD and IRSD measure?

IRSAD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage. Combines indicators of advantage (e.g. high income, skilled occupations) and disadvantage. Higher decile = more advantaged relative to other Australian areas.

IRSD — Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage. Focuses on disadvantage only (e.g. low income, unemployment, limited education). Higher decile = less disadvantage nationally.

A new SEIFA edition typically follows each census; the ABS has not announced a release date beyond 2021.
